Mama and Daughter is the latest publication by acclaimed artist and photographer Aneta
Grzeszykowska. Sequenced by the artist, the book is built around photographs from its two
titular series.
In Mama, the artist’s daughter, Franciszka, plays with a lifelike effigy of her mother. We see her
whiling away the summer holidays with it: combing its hair and doing its makeup, taking it for
walks and drowning it. The effigy is only a torso and a head—a mutilated body, left not whole
and wholly subject to the child’s will. In these photographs, the boundary between acts of
violence and care, between revulsion and tenderness, is blurred. Together with the artist, we
gaze at her double, which lives her life with necromantic panache.

Daughter complicates things further still. Grzeszykowska puts on a mask that reconstructs her teenage face with uncanny verisimilitude. She stares at us through eyes of blue glass, at times flat and lifeless, at others glistening and vital. Posed amid idyllic meadows, lakes, and beaches, this hybrid figure of the artist once again confronts us with unsettling experiences of beauty. She becomes a metamorphic disturbance, an embodied ambiguity—sister to her own daughter, daughter to her partner, her own child—rendering every social, cultural, and aesthetic construct porous.
Through the obsessive repetition of motifs and devices and a radical montage of images, Mama and Daughter becomes an intimate and intense encounter with the work of Aneta Grzeszykowska.
The book includes “Brutal Beauty,” an interview with the artist conducted by dramaturg Anka
Herbut.
